MPAVILION 2022: 3 PIECES OF A PUZZLE
A series of films with a more in-depth look at each of the MPavilion architects who will all be featured in the mainframe documentary ‘Building Butterflies’ – see Projects.
First in this series, innovative, experimental Thai architect Rachaporn Choochuey. Her brilliant pavilion with three exquisite layers of material draped over a tubular steel perimeter frame was part Thai temple, part circus tent. A brilliant explosion of colour in the King’s Domain.
SKYWHALES
Patricia Piccinini, Australia’s representative at the 2003 Venice Biennale, is best known for her mutant life-like creatures and her her extraordinary, giant, flying SkyWhale balloons. This short film recorded a part of her national tour of the giant creatures sponsored by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation and the National Gallery of Australia. Filmed in front of an adoring crowd in the daybreak at Yarra Bend, Melbourne.
PORTRAIT OF BERNIE
The Law Institute of Victoria decided to honour the much-loved Supreme Court Judge, Justice Bernard Teague with a painting it commissioned by the Archibald Prize winning artist Lewis Miller. And to record this, the LIV also commissioned a 15-minute film of the project which was in turn launched at the National Gallery of Victoria. The film demonstrated the judge’s humane and empathetic approach to the law. Meanwhile, Lewis Miller’s portrait of Judge Teague made it to the final five at the 2016 Archibald.
MURRAY WALKER (FEATURING MICHAEL LEUNIG)
Michael Leunig gave an excellent summary of Murray’s outlook and his output of art. The film has been shown many times, most recently at the Ballarat Gallery of Art where he was given a retrospective and later at the National Gallery of Victoria. Most recently he was exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art at Heide where he first met John and Sunday Reed whose farm-house became a home from home for many of Australia’s most important artists including Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Albert Tucker and John Perceval.
